Spotted: High-waisted shorts on Campus
With orientation at most universities currently underway, it has been very interesting to see the fashion choices of first-years. Trends range from floral tshirt dresses and sparkly hippie-headbands to horizontal stripes and bags with Pocahontas fringes.
But my favourite observation so far? High-waisted shorts.
I’m currently obsessed with faded demin cut-offs, and I’m thrilled to see people wearing them so well. But there have (surprisingly) been been tons of other variations spotted on campus. Perhaps because the trend seems to still be in the “hey have you seen those..?” phase, and (thankfully) doesn’t seem to have hit the mainstream just yet. Variations spotted range from casual oldladyfloral to tailored vintage fabrics.
There’s something about wearing them that just feels cool. -It might be the comfort of my hands in the pockets, it might be the excitement in shopping for crop-tops… -and for those of us who weren’t blessed with dangerously long supermodel legs, it is most certainly the knowledge that the shorts make our legs seem much longer than they are.
I say this hesitantly, being very aware of the way trends tend to blow up and suddenly feel less stylish, (Usually about a month after Mr Price stocks it.. And I make this statement as one of the people who gives in to the temptation of overspending on Mr Price’s insanely affordable clothing. It’s just reality.) -but you really should invest in a pair (or two) of high waisted shorts.
The best part about high-waisted shorts is that there really isn’t a wrong way to wear them (if they fit right). Pair them with Tomy takkies and a lightweight tshirt, or espadrilles and a blouse, with pumps or brogues and a printed tee. Not a big fan of these shorts with boots, but if you can make it work, embrace it!
A very important note about crop-tops: Please, oh please, don’t attempt to wear them with other pants. Unless for some reason you’re involved in a remake of the Baby One More Time music video, only wear a crop top with highwaisted shorts!
If you're brave enough, pair them with a bandeau top! (And if you find a cool red Pocahontas bag like hers, invest!)
Try the shorts on with tops you already own, it’s a different vibe seeing them tucked in. That’s really all it is; loosely tucked-in anything! Try it now before everyone’s doing it and suddenly you’re just another lame conformist.
