What Women Think Men Want (changing your mind about beauty)
Something for you to chew over just a bit…
I hope that you have spent the past two weeks comparing yourself less to the airbrushed, botoxed, unhealthy people seen in the media. And that you have done something that has made you feel beautiful (heck I sound like one of those cheesy self-help books). But moving forward, the next thing I want you to think about is why girls (sorry lads, one of the boys is going to have to write something for you!) go to so much trouble to be phyisically percieved in a certain way.
Now I know that after a long day at varsity the last thing you want to do is to read some girl’s ramblings about feelings, but stay with me for a bit longer: and ask yourself who you dressed for this morning, who you ate for today, who you excercised for, and why. A few of you may immediately answer that you do these things to feel good about yourself, and if that’s your honest answer then great, but for many of you that the answer is superficial and that’s just not good enough.
The most common (but denied) reason, I believe, that girls want to look good is for boys. Yes, I did just say that. I think that we buy into the Hollywood romance idea that the end goal is to get the perfect man and to do that we need to look just like the perfect girl (our version of the perfect girl) which, lets be honest, mostly entails us being a lot thinner than we are.
This is how I think most of the time, “If I’m just a tiny bit thinner/browner/sexier I would be more appealing to my boyfriend,” and before I was going out with him I thought, “If I’m just a tiny bit thinner/browner/sexier he will like me.”

The lady on the far left is the womans ideal body shape, the lady in the middle is the mans ideal body shape, and the lady on the far right is the womans average body shape. You see most of us are on the far right and when we look to the media it tells us that to get a dashing young man we ought to look lik the lady on the far left! (I am in no way saying that this particular lady is unhealthy.) But what I am saying is that women-without really understanding what men want-set themselves, and their bodies, ridiculous and unfair expectations. Yeah, even you.
I’ll leave you to chew on that for a while.
